How To Avoid The Headaches Of Driving Without Insurance

Buying car insurance can be confusing, expensive, and a no-fun chore. But, the alternative, that of driving without it, is even worse. Many people try it. That is why laws have been developed that require it. Many people have been financially devastated by trying to omit it. There are a lot of reasons why that is not wise, however. Some are more serious that others.

The major reason for wanting coverage is the expense that you might encounter in the event of an accident. Cars are very expensive these days, even used ones. Not many families are prepared to pay for the replacement of a car they have wrecked. In addition to having to replace the automobile, there will be damages charged to you if you are at fault. They will have to be paid or you will suffer dire consequences.

Another problem in going without coverage is when you have a financed vehicle. If it is totaled, whether you are at fault or a driver who doesn’t have insurance, you are obligated for paying for a car you no longer have use of. Even if it is not totaled, there is still the expense of the loan payment, plus the added expense of repairs to make it usable again.

Another danger of trying to operate a vehicle without adequate insurance is in case of injury. If you are injured and have high medical expenses, you will have a major expense at a time when you may not be able to work for a time. If you include medical coverage, you will be compensated for lost wages as well as having a portion of your medical expenses compensated.

Most jurisdictions now require liability coverage. Penalties for not having it are much more expensive than what any coverage may cost. You can lose your license, tags and registration, and may even have you vehicle impounded. On top of having to pay for the other driver’s car, you must pay related fees for getting reinstated. If your license is revoked, you may not be able to get to work.

Car insurance may seem like a waste, something you would rather not pay for. Most people don’t enjoy paying for it, especially when it seems a wasted expense. If never needed, you may think you have wasted your money. But, not having it can not only be costly. The peace of mind you get from having it is hard to put a value on.
