How Your Marital Status Affects Your Car Insurance Coverage

Like all types of business, car insurance companies do have some quirks. Among these is their concern over their client’s marital status. Yes, being married or single may have an impact on your insurance policy. And although many people find this sort of thing surprising and in some cases, even ridiculous, there’s actually a good reason behind them.

For those car insurance companies which consider the marital status of a driver an issue, the reasoning they hold to is that if you are married, you are a more responsible person. Of course, this is a sweeping generalization, but married people are more likely to be responsible with their car and finances than those who are still single. And because of this, married people tend to be less reckless with their driving.

Another issue related to the marital status is with regards to driving habits. What this basically means is that if you are married you will be paying for two drivers as opposed to just one. In this situation, both spouses can either get a single policy (which is a lot cheaper), or they could get two policies for each of one.

The issue doesn’t end there however. Married couples may sometimes have two cars instead of one, and thus may have different driving habits than people who own only one car. If your wife or husband both drive the car frequently then it’s best to use just one policy for both of your needs. However, if your spouse doesn’t drive a lot then it may be easier to get him or her a smaller and cheaper coverage, whereas you get one which offers more protection. These may seem superficial things, but they are concerns for married car owners and drivers.

Because of the importance of one’s marital status, you can expect questions about it when you look for quotes online. Answer them honestly. In addition to your own driving record, most car insurance providers just want to know about your wife or husband’s driving skills, how long they’ve been driving and whether or not they already have an insurance policy in place.

Of course, where there is marriage there is also the possibility of divorce. And if you are divorced in the course of your current insurance policy, you may loose some discounts if you and your spouse share the same policy.

So in closing, expect to encounter questions about your marital status. The whole point of that question is to provide you with quotes which fit your needs.
