Is There a Wrong Time for Temp Car Insurance?

If you find yourself wondering if you need temp car insurance for one reason or another, the answer is probably going to be “Yes!” I personally don’t know anyone who is consumed with thoughts of insurance and how it protects our everyday life, with the exception of insurance agents, and well, that’s how they earn their living and as representative of the industry and your belongings, that is a good thing. For most drivers, as long as their policy is paid up and a current insurance card is in the glove compartment, readily available, why worry?

Just because you have coverage on your home and vehicles, doesn’t mean anything you touch or use is automatically protected from damage or theft. Things will come up now and then where you are going to be in possession of different car, truck or van and you are going to be using it to do something that you couldn’t use your own ride to do. Even if your friend or family member has given you permission to borrow the car and said: “Don’t worry, I’ve got good coverage.” you should give seriously consider buying an inexpensive temp car insurance policy. It’s quick and easy to find and purchase online and in the worst case scenario, it could save you years of regret and financial ruin.

Accidents can happen at any time to anyone. When you wreck your family car, life as you know it seems to screech to a halt, and nothing is as easy as it once was. You are now faced with extra expenses and unnecessary problems you didn’t need. The best way to compound that mess is to have the accident in a different car. They certainly didn’t ask for this. They were just doing a good deed. Even if you have the good fortune to have both of your policies pay for a good part of the repair costs and possible medical bill, good luck collecting on any legal settlements that might ensue. Guess whose rates are going up! Both of you will pay those consequences. At the very least your friend could lose the no-claims discount, or accident free annual rebate she worked so hard to qualify for. If either of you had just gotten online or called your agent to set up a temp car insurance policy with a little comprehensive coverage, all those problems would never have happened.

I like to believe (in a perfect world) that because you followed your gut and followed the law and bought that temporary car insurance policy before even turning the key in the ignition of her car, that the accident never happened. You can call it Karma for being a real grownup or blame it on recent exposure to all things insurance while you were researching and buying the temp car insurance.

To the friend who is doing the favor: you are well within your rights to insist they buy a temp insurance policy for the time they’ll be driving. Then they may borrow the car. Oh, and finally; one more piece of advice. Please don’t left friendship make you stupid. Get the facts! Check their license; ask them a bit about their past driving history and the question I forgot to ask: Do you have any outstanding warrants? The impound fees that they charge when your car is sitting the in the police impound lot are compound daily, you know. I’m just saying…It happens. You aren’t being a jerk. You are acting responsibly and protecting your assets. We all have the right to want to protect what is ours and this way you are just obeying the law and keeping life from jumping the track.
